There is a buzz on the street lately that so many women have been talking about.  It seems to be spreading like wildfire and I’m tempted to leap into the coals and find out what it’s all about.

Many women are transforming themselves and creating, or perhaps just uncovering, their own personal style through one-on-one sessions with Image and Style Consultants.

I remember a time in my early twenties when a friend of mine threw a ‘makeup’ party and part of the program was having each of our ‘colours’ analyzed to see if we fell into a ‘spring’, ‘summer’, ‘autumn’ or ‘winter’.  From there, we were shown which colours suited our complexion as well as how to apply these colours to our faces to maximize our best features.

Only 2 years ago a girlfriend of mine went back to the UK to visit her family and hired a personal shopper to help her find all the right clothes for a new job she was about to start after being out of the workforce for many years.  Although not particularly free with her money, she found the experience well-worth every cent and is still thrilled with the results.

Today, the system is far more complex and all-encompassing.  Personal branding, as it has been referred to, includes analyzing body type, shape, lifestyle; are you athletic, a business-woman, full-time mom or homemaker.  It also includes colour analysis which can greatly affect the appearance of a woman, making them look older, younger, more radiant or lifeless, professional, sporty, trendy or chic.

Truly amazing!  Isn’t that what we are always asking ourselves every time we walk into our closet?  How many times have you stood in front of your wardrobe in confusion and frustration asking yourself, ‘what am I going to wear today?’  Wouldn’t it be so much easier to walk in there, pull anything down and know immediately that you’re going to look great?!

Not only that, but some Consultants will come to your house and stand in your closet with you and tell you what you should keep and politely tell you what you need to donate.  What woman doesn’t need that?  We’re asking our husbands and partners their opinions all the time and, quite honestly, what do they know?

And if that wasn’t enough, some Consultants will take you shopping…  it’s like a dream come true!  Where do I sign up?  Obviously there is a cost to all this.  But I figure what you make up in buying the right clothes will save you from buying, and eventually tossing, the clothes you’ll never wear.  Personally, I like my odds.

Now I know I’ve just been using the feminine form up to now, but I do know of some men also who have seen a Style Consultant and are very pleased, if not surprised, about how much they got out of it.

As I don’t normally endorse people I haven’t worked with personally, and please note I never get paid for any endorsements anyway, I have heard some great things about a woman here in Nelson who has done consulting for all my friends.  Her name is Bebe and she is an Images and Style consultant for the House Of Colour. Check out her site here.

That being said, I know there are some other very reputable consultants in the city.  Take a look online and see if anyone tickles your fancy.  If you want a ‘quick fix’ and don’t have the money to spend, I found a website called Joy of Clothes.  You can take an in-depth Style Quiz that helps you find the same kind of information regarding your personal style, shape and colour palettes.  It will place recommendations in your Style File for reference.

Either way, it’s great to know there are resources available to help shed some light on the bane of a woman’s existence and stop them from saying, ‘I have nothing to wear!’

I had the pleasure of photographing a pair of very distinctive and stylish boots this past weekend that were made in South Africa.  My girlfriend sourced these while living in South Africa and decided women of the world needed to have a pair.  And she is so right!  She definitely has vision!

Each pair of boots are made with a different fabric so no 2 pairs are alike.  But the shape remains the same and can be manipulated to provide ultimate comfort for any shape foot.

Our local models very kindly offered to show them off for us as we braved the blazing heat in Miri, Malaysia.  What I love about these boots, other than the fact that no two pairs are alike, is how you can wear them with virtually any outfit.  They can be worn fully extended over skinny jeans or leggings or rolled down with a pair of jean shorts.  I really loved them rolled down!

We weren’t too long outside as the air conditioning in the studio was calling to us!  Once the makeup was re-applied by our fabulous makeup artist, Nicola Ingram, we resumed our shoot in more comfortable surroundings.

This was our ‘shot of the day’!

This was truly hard to achieve as our models were finding it very difficult to be ‘fierce’ and started having giggling fits.  I’m so happy everyone was having so much fun though!

If you would like to read more about this shoot and see some ‘behind-the-scenes’ footage, check out Nicole’s blog here.

October 11, 2012

October is my favourite month out of the year.  In Canada, I love the bright orange, red and yellow leaves on the trees and the cool crispness in the air.  I love being able to wear cozy sweaters and fashionable leather boots.  I love snuggling up in blankets and reading a good book by the fireplace.

However, in Malaysia where I currently live, it is hot (average of 32C), humid and summer all year long.  So no sweaters, no boots, no snuggling in warm blankets and definitely no fireplaces.  But October is still my favourite month because it’s Breast Cancer Awareness month.  I am an absolute advocate of early detection and screening, mammograms and supporting the fighters and survivors of this terrible disease.  Every year, for the past 10 years I have joined the 5km runs, and taken photographs for various cancer charity events.  I love the positive, energetic vibe I feel during this amazing month.

I also love that the colour ‘pink’ is in full swing.  Pink is being used in everything from t-shirts, shoes, logos, even the NFL uniforms have splashes of pink all month long!  LOVE that!  The fashion industry has also exploded with all different shades of this fun colour!  Ralph Lauren is promoting their Pink Pony campaign.  Hard Rock has their Pinktober campaign which I was more than happy to support – got the t-shirt!  Not too long ago I did my own PINK campaign – Pin Up style!  Proceeds going to the Cancer Society…

Whether you join the races, attend the events, furnish your house in pink or wear the high fashion clothes in support of Breast Cancer, it’s all going to a good cause!  I admit  I don’t often wear pink but the coat with the black boots are pretty killer and although I wouldn’t normally buy any pink accessories for my home, I’m actually liking this pink rug!  It’s pretty safe to say that October is a great time to embrace the pink!

So I wouldn’t consider myself a ‘fashionista’ but I do love following trends and livening up my wardrobe from time to time with pops of colour or prints.  I pretty much stick to basics myself but when photographing the young and vibrant teen-to-twenty-something set, I LOVE styling prints against mute backgrounds and capturing stand-out colours and textures.

From what I’ve been noticing lately, Aztec prints are making a comeback and they’re HOT for summer!  Students are snapping up aztec wedges, bracelets and tank tops this season.  They can be multi-coloured or even just patterns in black & white:

As you can see, this trend comes in dresses, skirts, tops, jewellery and shoes!   Oooooh… I may have to go find myself a pair of those wedges…

Valerie is one of the most amazing women I know!  She has more energy than I could ever hope to have.  She runs a minimum of 10k several times a week and is always on the move in some way, shape or form.  She’s smart, quick-witted and on the ball.  And her sense of style is modern and ‘hip’!  Valerie wanted to have some pictures taken for her husband (as well as herself) and I was more than happy when she asked me to do it!  I really wanted to capture her joie de vive and sense of freedom and strength.
